Fixing Broken Storm Door Handles

Broken storm door handles are easy to replace if you're buying the exact same type. However, if you'd like to upgrade to a nicer model, like a top end brass handle, it can take a little more work. In many cases, the handle can't be replaced in exactly the same holes, meaning redrilling the door. Fortunately, the manufacturers of storm door handles know that this problem often occurs, so most packages will include a cover plate to cover up the old holes on the interior side of your door.

In order to install your new storm door handle, you'll need an electric drill with the correct size bits. 5/16" and 1/8" are common sizes. A screwdriver is also important. Check your individual door handle for the right size and tools needed. They may vary by brand and type. There are plenty of styles of storm door handles available on the market, including those that feature a matching deadbolt if you want to securely lock your door.

The old handle can be easily removed. Just unscrew the screws that hold its two halves together and put it aside. Then mark the door for the new locations of the holes. Many door handles come with templates you can use to do this. Be sure that none of the new holes land over the old ones, or you'll risk misalignment of the handle. First, drill pilot holes through the storm door with your smaller bit. Once this is done, you can use the larger one to enlarge them. Drill halfway through the door from one side, then go to the other side and repeat the process.

Once the holes have been successfully drilled, it's a simple process to put together your storm door handle according to the instructions on the package. Just screw the two halves together with the screws that have been provided. You can start them by hand to be sure they're in correctly, then tighten further with a screwdriver.

In addition to putting together the new handle, you'll also have to install a new strike plate. Close the door and hold it in the right place to mark the screw positions. Remove the plate and drill pilot holes of the appropriate size where you've marked. You can then shim the plate if needed, and screw it to the frame. You'll probably need to adjust it for a while, to make sure that the door can latch firmly, but without too much effort. Once you've determined the right location, you can tighten the screws. Your new storm door handle will be installed.
